The Bay County Road Commission has a variety
of responsibilities. The Road Commission
oversees maintenance and improvements to
over 1022 miles of road; of that 655 miles
are primary and 357 miles are from the local
road system. The Road Commission provides
maintenance activities to the 14 townships
within Bay County.
The primary road system is comprised of those roads,
which have the higher traffic volumes and are considered as the main arteries
within the county. Roads such as Wilder, Wheeler, Beaver, Garfield,
Knight, Cass, and Pinconning are examples of the primary road system.
The local road systems include roads that feed into
the primary system; neighborhood streets, subdivisions, urban areas including
such roads as Brown, Russell, Ridge, Amelith, Fraser, Nine Mile, Flajole,
Kitchen, and River.
In addition to the above, the Bay County Road Commission
is currently a MDOT contract agency; which means that we maintain 202
miles of State Highway within Bay County. This includes I-75, M-25,
M-15, M-13, M-138, and M-247. The MDOT work is limited to that which
is budgeted for and allowed by and through MDOT.
Our responsibilities are 365 days a year, 24 hours
a day. Listed below are just some of the typical road commission
duties:
- surface maintenance
- shoulder maintenance
- chip and sealing
- cracksealing
- snow removal, plowing, salting, and sanding
- blacktopping
- street painting and marking
- maintain road signage
- mowing and brush cutting
- road and bridge construction and repair
- ensuring steady and safe traffic patterns
- road side ditch and drainage preservation
- gravel road up keep
- dust control
The Road Commission currently maintains
a fleet of nine motor graders, fourteen
tandems, and nine single axle dump trucks
for all routine work. In addition,
the Road Commission has specialty equipment,
such as excavators, loaders, jet machines,
distributors, chip spreaders, catch basin
cleaners, aerial buckets, sign trucks, 4
x 4 pick ups with plows, crew leader trucks,
pumps, mowers, trailers, dozers, backhoes
and street sweepers. This equipment
is needed to provide the services that have
become our responsibility. The Road
Commission is aware that through our efforts,
we can provide a better quality of life
for our residents and we strive for this
goal. |
